Can a glass block wall be load bearing?

Glass block walls are not load-bearing, and may need to be strengthened by steel reinforcing rods positioned in the mortar, or by the framing into which they are set. Is that correct? The calculation doesn't allow for the mortar joints, and it's recommended to buy more than you need.
