Can a timing belt slip off?

The engine's fire rate could be affected by a worn out timing belt. Is that correct? Sometimes the belt can slip on the camshaft drive and cause one cylinder to open or close earlier than it should. If not replaced soon, this may cause a misfire situation and result in catastrophic engine damage.
