Can I Clean My Dryer Vent Myself?
Yes, with the right tools you can clean your dryer vent on your own. You’ll need to purchase a dryer vent cleaning kit, which comes with a lint brush and flexible segments that allow for greater reach. Make sure you are comfortable disconnecting and reconnecting the duct before you begin.
What Are the Steps to Clean a Dryer Vent?
First, locate the duct’s starting point (inside your home) and end point (a vent located outside of your home). Then, safely disconnect your dryer from its power source: if the ducts are connected to the dryer with metal tape or clamps, you should be able to simply remove these.
Next, clean the vent. Use your dryer vent kit to thoroughly clean inside the ducts as well as the vent itself. Try spinning the brush counterclockwise with some speed to dislodge the buildup inside the duct.
After you’ve done this, reconnect the duct to the dryer and then connect the dryer to its power source. Now it’s time to give the dryer a trial run to make sure it's running smoothly. If it’s not operating as you’d expect or you run into more problems, it’s time to call in a professional.
