Can I put a bigger capacitor on a motor?

A motor that requires a 7.5 mfdCapacitor won't work with a 4.0 mfdCapacitor. Is that correct? A Capacitor that is too large can cause energy consumption to go up. The life of the motor will be shortened if it is too large or too small.
