Can i use a 40 amp breaker for a 30 amp dryer?

It's not ok to use a 40 Amp breaker for a dryer outlet. The receptacle cannot be protected by a bigger breaker. The manufacturer requires a 30 Amp breaker. Is this true? The receptacle, the dryer and the wire are protected by the breaker.
