Can you bury wire without conduit?

When the wire or cable is exposed on the outside of the house, or is going to be buried less than 18 inches below the ground, it needs a conduit. However, if you’re using a UF cable, it can be directly buried with a minimum of 24 inches cover as per the NEC (National Electrical Code).
