Can you short out a thermostat?

2 Answers. If you shorten the R cable to the C cable, it has actually created a closed circuit of low resistance through the secondary of the 24V transformer of the CVC system. While the thermostat is on the secondary side of the transformer, the circuit breaker of the CVC system can react too slow or not.
