Can you wire a three way switch as a single pole?

Yes, it can be done. 3-way switches are spdt with 3 screw terminals and regular switches are spst with 2 screw terminals. Pick the correct contacts and you are good to go. There is a chance that this could be the case. The easiest way to figure out which terminal to use is by using a multimeter.
