Do gas fireplaces have to have a glass front?

Gas fireplaces don't solve a chimney problem. If you install gas logs, the damper in your chimney might have to be permanently blocked. If you install glass doors in front of the gas fireplace, the doors must remain open while the fire is burning to reduce drafts and heat loss.
