Does a dishwasher have to be on a dedicated circuit?

Because of the power it needs, a dishwasher should have its own circuit, separate from the two individual appliance circuits that are positioned above your countertop. Is that correct? Dishwashers use either 115- or 120-volt power. A 15-amp circuit is needed for the dishwasher circuit.
