Does a gas stove require a hood?

The range hood needs to remove 100 kilowatts per minute for every 10,000 kilowatts of burner output to be considered a good rule of thumb. Is this true? A gas stove with 50,000Btu of total burner output needs a range hood that can hold 500Btu per minute.
