Does a nest thermostat need a common wire?

Most of the time, a Nest Thermostat can work without a wire. The internal battery is charged using the power from the heating and cooling wires. Micro-controller-based systems and certain gas valves will need a C-wire to work with the Nest Learning Thermostat.
