Does vinegar remove rust from stainless steel?

If possible, submerge the rusty object in a tall cup of vinegar. Is this true? The rust can be wiped with a sponge. It's best to use distilled white vinegar, but any type will work. If you want to gently wipe away rust, you could pour or spray a bit of vinegar onto a soft scrubbing pad.
