My Furnace is Short Cycling

Does your furnace call the shots when it comes to setting the temperature? If the temperature in your home doesn't match what you set on the thermostat and your system is randomly shutting on and off, it's probably short cycling.

Issues That May Be Making Your Furnace Short Cycle

As inconvenient as this may be, your furnace shuts down to keep your family and your home safe: Short cycling is your furnace's way of protecting itself as it overheats by shutting off to prevent damage.

Short cycling is a process that can destroy a furnace over time, if left unaddressed. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do while you wait for an HVAC specialist.

Potential Issues

  • AC keeps turning on and off
  • furnace keeps turning on and off

Your thermostat regulates the temperature in your home. When it detects a temperature change, it signals your heating or cooling system to run until the temperature reaches the setpoint. If your thermostat is faulty, it may tell your HVAC systems to start and then stop at seemingly random times resulting in an uncomfortable living space temperature.

  • whistling noise from the ductwork
  • furnace keeps turning on and off
  • home is unusually dirty
  • AC keeps turning on and off

In order to properly provide hot/cold airflow in your home, the HVAC filter needs to be clear of debris to let air pass through. Over time, the filter on your heating and cooling system collects dirt and dust. You must clean the filters on a regular basis to keep the air in your home and your system running efficiently.

Each home has different needs. Having an oversized piece of HVAC equipment can be just as big an issue as having an undersized one. Too small and your home will get too hot, too large and your HVAC might short cycle.

The heating and cooling system in your home is a mechanical system with many moving parts. Unlike most of your home appliances, it is exposed to the outside environment, refrigerant pressures, temperature changes during and after operation, motor bearing wear and electronic circuits that weaken. Though designed to be hardy and work reliably for years, there comes a point in the system's life where components wear out and the cost of the repair exceeds the remaining value of the system.
