How can you tell if your thermostat is open?

If you don't have a temperature gauge, you can see when the thermostat is open by looking at the heat coming off of the upper radiator hose. It will get very warm very quickly, so make sure you don't touch it with your hand or it will get burned. At this point in time, your radiator will start heating up.
