How deep should a threaded hole be?

The depth of a fastening must be at least twice its nominal diameter. For example, a 14" (0.25") fastening must be threaded at least 12" (0.50") depth. Deeper than this and the wires really don't do much except add the mounting time. The thread step also plays a role in the depth of a fastening should be.
