How do I replace a Ground Drive Belt in a Rear-Engine Riding Mower?

Follow these steps to fix your issue:

  1. Disconnect the spark plugs

    Set the parking brake and move the mower to a work area. When you remove the belt, list a helpers.

  2. Release the blade belt

    The deck should be lowered to the lowest position. The mower deck has a left pulley cover. Roll the blade drive belt off of the left blade pulley. Remove the blade drive belt from the electric clutch by reaching under the rear of the mower frame.

  3. Remove the mower deck

    Release the hanging brackets from the mower deck by removing the mower deck mounting pins. The mower deck should be released from the front brackets. From under the mower frame, pull the mower deck out.

  4. Remove the electric clutch

    Plug the electric clutch wiring harness back in. Pull the cover off to get to the nut. While you remove the mounting bolt from the clutch, have a helpers hold the flywheel nut. The clutch needs to be removed from the engine's crankshaft. The electric clutch wiring harness should be noted when pulling the clutch off the engine shaft.

  5. Remove the ground drive belt

    When you roll the ground drive belt off of the engine pulley, have your helpers lift the driver seat and push in the idler pulley brackets. Pull the ground drive belt out of the mower by releasing it from the transmission pulleys.

  6. Install the new ground drive belt

    Take the ground drive belt over the cooling fans and onto the transmission pulleys. The belt should be Threaded through the idler pulley and the engine crankshaft pulley. Roll the belt onto the engine pulley while your helpers push it. The driver's seat needs to be flipped down.

  7. Reinstall the electric clutch

    Position the bushing on top of the electric clutch. Line up the slot in the electric clutch pulley with the key in the engine shaft and push the electric clutch onto the engine shaft. Make sure that the tab in the electric clutch bracket engages the mounting slot on the electric clutch frame. While your helper holds the flywheel nut, reinstall the electric clutch mounting bolt. Reattach the flywheel cover. Reconnect the electric clutch wire harness. Tip: Make sure that the electric clutch wire harness is routed to the engine properly on reassembly

  8. Reinstall the mower deck

    The mower deck needs to be pushed under the frame. The mower deck needs to be reinstalled. Attach the mower deck hanging brackets with mounting pins.

  9. Reattach the blade belt

    The blade drive belt needs to be reinstalled. Roll the blade belt back onto the left blade pulley after pushing the blade belt idler pulley inward. The pulley cover has to be reinstalled. The blade belt needs to be routed correctly when the mower deck is reinstalled.

  10. Reconnect the spark plugs

    The spark plugs have wires on them.

Time required:

90 minutes.
