How do I replace a Shifter Assembly in a Top-Load Washer?

Follow these steps to fix your issue:

  1. Shut off the electricity and water

Plug the wall outlet into the power cord. Wear gloves and turn off the water supply valves. Someone may be able to help you move the washer away from the wall.

  2. Disconnect the hoses

Mark which fill hose goes to hot or cold. Carefully loosen and remove the fill hoses with channel lock pliers. Expect some water to come out. The drain hose is behind the washer. Expect some water to come out. To prevent slipping, wipe up water spills with a towel.

  3. Carefully lay the washer on its front panel

The washer should be moved to an area where you can fix it. If you want to prevent scratching the front of the washer, lay cardboard or towels in front of it. If you want to access the drain pump from the bottom of the washer, you need to tilt the washer forward and put it on the front panel.

  4. Remove the shifter

The bolts that hold the plastic cover over the motor and drive components can be removed. Set aside the plastic cover. Remove the locking tabs on the wire harness connection and pull the wire harness out of the shifter. The mode shifter is attached to the base of the washer by 2 screws. The washer base needs to be pulled off the shifter. The position of the peg is noted.

  5. Install the new shifter

Place the peg on the new shifter the same way as the previous one. The new shift needs to be put in place. Make sure the peg is in the right place. Put the mounting screws back in place. Make sure the locking tabs are in place when you push the wire harness plug into the shifter. The motor and drive components should be positioned on the plastic cover. Attach the mounting holes with bolts. Attach the bolts firmly.

  6. Set the washer upright

Carefully set the washer upright position and move it close enough to connect the fill hoses.

  7. Reinstall the fill hoses

Attach the fill hoses to the back of the washer. Use channel lock pliers to tighten the connections.

  8. Restore the water and power

The valves for the water supply should be turned on. Plug the washer into the electrical outlet if there is a small leak. The washer must be returned to its original location.
