How do thermostats work on radiators?

What do Thermostatic Radiator Valves do? Is that correct? The valve head is on top of the valve body. As the room temperature changes, the valve head expands, adjusting a pin in the valve body to open or close it. As the room gets hotter, the valve body gets less hot water.
