How do you get a sink stopper out?

If you want to remove the pivot rod from the sink, you have to turn the nut counterclockwise and use a pair of pliers. The pivot rod is a small rod that extends from the sink's drain under the sink. The pivot rod needs to be removed and the stopper pulled out of the drain.
