How do you install a GFCI outlet with old wiring?

Attach the black and white wires to the line side of the outlet to install the new ground-fault circuit interrupter. The bare wire needs to be connected. Make sure the GFCI is working correctly by replacing the cover plate. The outlet should go dead if you press the test button.
