How do you reduce the starting current of a refrigerator?

Use a hard start. When my backup generator is running, I reduced the starting current for my AC. The peak of the start and run winding currents are shifted by the extra capacitance. When a sufficient voltage is achieved, the relay device in the unit cuts the Capacitor out.
