How do you remove the water filter from a Whirlpool refrigerator?

The left side of the refrigerator's base grille has a water filter cap. Pull the cap out after rotating it counterclockwise until the handle is vertical. The cap should be removed by sliding it off the end of the filter. Don't discard the old filter, but keep the cap.
