How does a gfci outlet work?

The GFCI is integrated into the outlet itself, unlike a home's fuse. The amount of power going to the appliance is monitored by the GFCI outlet. The amount of current flowing from hot to neutral is monitored. It trips the circuit if there is an imbalance.
