How does a hydraulic counterbalance valve work?

Counterbalance valves are used to deal with suspended loads and over running loads. The counterbalance valve prevents the load from dropping if there is no pressure in the line leading to the cylinder's cap-end port. The check valve raises the load by letting fluid flow into the port.
