How does a water softener cycle work?

The hard water minerals in the water are exchanged for the salt on the beads. Is this true? The brine solution flows through the tank, rinsing the beads and exchanging newsodium for the hard water minerals that have been collected. The water softener backwash cycle is what this is known as.
