How does a zone valve actuator work?

Zone valves in home hydronic systems are usually powered by electricity. Is that correct? When power is applied to the "open valve" terminal, the motor will run until the valve is closed, and when power is applied to the "close valve" terminal, the motor will run until the valve is open.
