How does back pressure affect engine performance?

As back pressure increases, the pressure drop across the turbine will decrease, the shaft speed will be reduced and the intake boost pressure and intake air mass flow will decrease. Before performance starts to be affected by higher exhaust back pressure, higher engine speeds are able to tolerate it.
