How does geothermal heating system work?

In winter, fluid circulating through the system's earth loop or well absorbs stored heat from the ground and carries it indoors. Is this true? Unlike ordinary heating and cooling systems, geothermal systems don't burn fossil fuel to generate heat, they just transfer heat to and from the earth.
