How long are washing machines supposed to last?

The average life expectancy of a new washing machine is 11 years. Unless it's a high-end model and has a particular appeal to you, Consumer Reports doesn't recommend replacing any appliance that's more than eight years old. Replacing any top-loading washer made in 1999 or earlier is suggested by others.
