How much water should be in a toilet tank?

toilets used 3.5 gallons per flush from 1982 to 1993. Federal guidelines require newer toilets to use less water, with the maximum being 1.6 gallons per flush. At 1.28 gallons or less per flush, water- efficient toilets can use even less.
