Is heating cooking oil bad?

The release of high concentrations of chemicals called aldehydes, which have been linked to illnesses including cancer, heart disease and dementia, can be caused by heating up vegetable oils. Is this true? In tests, the levels of aldehydes were lower when butter, olive oil and lard were heating up.
