Is pipe thread sealant better than teflon tape?

Typically, it's applied to the thread end or pipes and fittings and on the inside of the connection piece, so it provides a seal that is tight. Is this true? Plumbing and other professionals use pipe dope instead of Teflon tape for seals that are permanent because it is generally stronger than Teflon tape.
