Is thermostat part of engine?

The cooling system consists of an engine, a water pump, a cooling fan, hoses, and a thermostat. Is this true? The thermostat is similar to a valve that opens and closes based on its temperature. The thermostat keeps the engine out of the radiator until it reaches a minimum temperature.
