Identifying A Stove Burner That's Not Working

Stove acting up? It may be the burner socket. Over time, your stove’s burner socket can wear due to age, heat, and excessive movement from the burner. There may also be a weak connection if the burner element is not placed firmly enough in the socket itself.

How Do I Know If My Stove Burner Socket Is Faulty?

If you notice that none of your stove burners are heating properly or are only heating partially, there’s likely a weak connection in the burner socket. This will prevent it from providing your stove with enough power to heat up.

How to Check for a Poor Connection in Your Stove Burner

  • Shut off the electricity to the cooktop. You can do this by unplugging the cooktop or stove. If the plug is too hard to reach, flip the breaker that powers the cooktop and ensure that no one can turn it back on while you're working.

    CAUTION: Always disconnect the appliance from its power source before beginning work.

  • Ensure the burner element isn't hot. If you've used it recently, give it sufficient time to cool. When you're sure it's safe, grip the coil element firmly and pull it away from the socket. It should pull away easily. Once the burner is removed, pull the drip pan out of the cooktop. Next, lift the main cooktop and look at the socket closely. If you see any burnt or dark spots, the socket could be faulty.

    CAUTION: Always check for hot surfaces before handling a burner element.

  • Inspect the plug on the burner element. If you see burnt ends, the element could be bad. If you don't see any dark, burnt spots, check the prongs. They should be straight and evenly spaced. Bent or unevenly spaced prongs can break the connection between the element and the socket. If the prongs look good too, it's likely that the element just wasn't pushed firmly into the socket.

What to Do About a Faulty Stove Burner?

When your stove burner socket can no longer handle the heat, it’s time to replace it. You may also consider replacing the stove burner element if you suspect it’s part of the issue. The sooner you do so, the sooner you can return to cooking your favorite warm meals.
