AC Compressor Replacement

Inside your air conditioning system, there’s a part called the compressor, which acts like the powerhouse of the system. The compressor pumps refrigerant through your AC system to cool the air in your home. When the compressor isn’t working properly, your air conditioner won’t be able to circulate cold air.

Time for a Compressor Replacement

What causes a compressor to fail? There are a couple of reasons. Perhaps the air conditioning unit is dirty and causing improper air flow in the system, or maybe your system is out of refrigerant. Of course, it might just be old age. Over the course of its lifetime, your AC compressor does a whole lot of pumping. All that pumping wears it out, and eventually the compressor needs to be replaced. AC compressors have a lifespan of approximately 10 to 15 years.

How do you know it’s time to replace your AC compressor? The way your system behaves will send signals about your compressor: If your AC is no longer functioning properly, trips the circuit breaker or seems louder than normal, the compressor may have failed.

Signs it’s time for a new AC compressor

There are several signs that it’s time to get your system’s compressor replaced. Here are a couple to watch out for:

  • Circuit breaker for the outdoor unit trips several times or won’t reset

  • Compressor is noisy and unreliable

  • It no longer provides the level of cooling required by your home

How Does an AC Compressor Replacement or Installation Work?

Get an assessment of your air conditioning system

An HVAC specialist will assess your air conditioner and find the source of the issue. If the compressor is to blame, your technician will discuss what went wrong and prescribe a compressor replacement. This may be the time to consider replacing the system instead.

Review the estimate with the specialist

You’ll be quoted based on the type of air conditioner you have, and the type and size of compressor that it requires. You have options, so don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Install your AC Compressor

An HVAC technician will come to your house to replace your system’s old compressor with a new one. This typically takes between 4 to 6 hours, depending on the service provider.
