Should a heat pump be covered in the winter?

Is it a good idea to cover my heat pump in the winter? The heat pump runs all year long so you shouldn't cover it. As long as it's running, it needs to be able to release exhaust from the top and take in air along the sides. A storm can cause snow to accumulate on the heat pump.
