Should you caulk around toilet?

The toilet can be secured to the floor with caulk. The bolts are supposed to hold the toilet in place, but caulk can help. Is this true? Some people like to caulk all around the toilet and leave a small gap at the back of the toilet to allow water to escape in the event of a leak.
