Should you leave the microwave door open after cooking?

If you just cooked something, the steam created is best dissipated by leaving the door open for a short time. It needs to be wiped down inside. Is that correct? I've seen older microwaves that were not treated that had rust lines on the door face of the main body, where water was left after cooking.
