What causes a generator not to start?

It is low on oil. There is an oil level in the crankcase. It's out of gas. The choke lever is in the wrong position. The fuel valve is not open. The air is locked in the carburetor. The spark plug needs to be replaced. The low-oil sensor is malfunctioning. The battery is dead.
