What causes the ac coils to freeze?

Refrigerant leaks are the cause of frozen AC coils. Refrigerant runs through your AC coil, changing pressure and temperature to absorb heat. The lack of pressure will cause it to absorb more heat than it should. The lines are made and then the coils are frozen over.
