What causes the burner flame on a gas stove to be yellow?

A blue flame burns on a properly adjusted gas stove burner. A yellow burner flame is a sign that the burner isn't getting enough air. An experienced do-it-yourselfer can adjust the burner's air shutter to admit more air.
