What causes toilet to make noise after flushing?

If you want to flush the toilet, open the tank. Lift the float ball to the top of the tank when the valve starts making noise. The ballcock mechanism has a loose washer if the noise stops. Is that correct? If the valve is sealed or the washer isn't working, replace it.
