What does 8 AWG mean?

The AWG is a set of non-ferrous wire conductor sizes. The diameter is what thegauge means. Is that correct? AWG number 12 or 14 is used for household wiring. Telephone wire can be 22 or 24. The thinner the wire, the smaller the diameter and the higher the gauge number.
