What does a flashing red light on a water heater mean?

If your water heater flashes a red light every 3 seconds, the pilot is lit and the gas valve works normally. If your water heater has a solid red light, it is shutting down and you should turn the gas valve off and wait 10 minutes before attempting to relight the pilot.
