What does a red light mean on a GFCI?

A red light indicates your GFCI has a potential problem and may need to be replaced. A green light indicates the GFCI is providing power properly and is safe to use. The small LED status indicator light on a GFCI (ground fault circuit interruptor) outlet gives you a convenient way to check the level of ground fault protection at a glance. A red light means that the GFCI outlet needs attention and that there is a potential problem. In this case, simply press the TEST and RESET buttons to reset the GFCI. If the light then turns to green, you are good to go and can use the outlet. If the GFCI will not reset or the light continues to show red, it means the device has been compromised and must be replaced. A green light indicates that the device is providing power properly.
