What does a red light mean on a GFCI?

The small LED status indicator light on a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet gives you a convenient way to check the level of ground fault protection at a glance. A red light means that the GFCI outlet needs attention and that there is a potential problem. In this case, simply press the TEST and RESET buttons to reset the GFCI. If the light then turns to green, you are good to go and can use the outlet.

A Working GFCI

A GFCI is there to protect you and your devices by cutting the power when it notices an interuption in the circuit. The light indicates its status. A green light tells you the GFCI is providing power properly and is safe to use.

If the GFCI will not reset or the light continues to show red, it means the device has been compromised and must be replaced.
