What does ac orifice tube do?

The orifice tube is similar to an expansion valve in that it is used to control the amount of refrigerant in the air. Is that correct? The amount of refrigerant left the compressor is regulated by this. The high and low pressure sections of the system are divided by Orifice tubes.
