What does the grain number mean in water softener?

The capacity of a water softener is how much it can remove before it needs to be regenerated. A pound of dissolved calcium and magnesium is 1/7000th of a grain of hardness. It takes between 18 and 30 pounds of salt to recover 30,000 grains of recovered capacity.
