What does the light mean on a GFCI outlet?
The color is a unique message: A green light indicates that the device has exceeded the auto-test and is providing energy, while a red light means the device needs attention.
Decoding a Red Light
If the light on your GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet is red, this means that during an auto-test, the GFCI detected a potential problem. In this case, just press the TEST and RESET buttons to restore the GFCI; the light should turn green, in which case you are in the clear. If the light doesn’t change colors, then there’s likely a larger issue that calls for replacing your device.
