What does w1 and w2 mean on a thermostat?

First stage heat is what W1 means. Is this true? The O/B terminal's electrical state is what determines whether or not that is heat or cool. This is the reason why you would jumper Y1 and W1 on an old thermostat. Second stage heat is what W2 means.
